The Draw-

Matchplay Draw 2020 Final Standings

This years club championship turned out to be an enthralling one considering we only decided to hold the competition towards the end of the summer season. Credit needs to be given to our Competitions Secretary Brian Durham & members of the Gents committee for getting the Club Championship organised and staged in such a short period of time.  Over 40 players battled it out over two qualifying rounds in order to progress to the knockout stage. It was great to feel the atmosphere around the club throughout the competition, with uncertainty as to who would qualify & then members trying to decide who would eventually lift the trophy considering how many tough draws the knockout stage gave us.

After 7 weeks of very competitive golf, it came down to two men! 2019 Champion Greg Mossop & Alex Park. With two great friends fighting out for the title of Club Champion 2020, it was sure to be a fascinating 36 holes of matchplay golf. Greg came out firing, starting with 2 birdies, however Alex held firm limiting Greg to 1UP thru 6.  At this point Alex had seemingly settled in to his game, winning holes 8 & 9 leaving Alex 1 up at the turn in round 1. They would then share birdies over the next two holes giving Alex a lead of 2UP leading into the back stretch. It was then Greg’s turn again to take the game to Alex. He managed to get the game back to A/S after 15 holes, then fires in two birdies in the last 3 holes to finish the 1st round 3UP. The second round started off with 7 holes of steady golf, Greg winning one of these holes to leave himself 4UP thru 7, however Alex decided to put his foot on the gas and win two holes on the bounce to get him back to 2Down leaving the match firmly in the balance. However for all of Alex’s hard work and determination to claw the match back, this drove Greg to put his foot down and played very steady golf for 4 holes ultimately putting the game out of Alex’s reach as Greg went on to win the 14th hole giving him a a 5UP win & the title of Eden Golf Club Champion 2020.

We thank all members for taking part in the competition making it fun & competitive. Thank you to family, friends and members who came out for the final to support Greg & Alex, and finally, thank you to Club Captain Malcolm Cooper for officiating the final and for his fantastic efforts for the club throughout the season.

The weather really did live up to the terrible forecast for Sundays Presentation Day Texas scramble, 35 brave souls took to the course in teams of 4 with exception of one team of three.

The course conditions to be fair were excellent considering the amount of rain which had fallen in recent days. Once back in the warmth and dry of the club house players were able to enjoy a complementary hot meal of cottage pie and peas before settling down to celebrate the 2019 winners receive their trophies.

The wining team was Rob Fulton, Danny Fowler, Damien Hudson and Luke O’Roarty with a gross score of 58.0.  The full results of the competition are available on HowDidiDo.

Club Captain Richard Dixon aided by his Vice Malcolm Cooper awarded each of the year’s winners their trophies, 21 trophies in all. The final presentation of the day was the Eden Golf Club Champion Golfer which was won this year by Greg Mossop following his hard fought 35 hole nail biting battle with this year’s runner-up Joe Bzik, Joe still manage to take two pieces of silverware home on the day.  See the Gallery for photographs of the winners.

Congratulations to all winners and participants of the 2019 season!

Sunday 1st September was a clear relatively sunny day, a refreshing change from the bad weather that the Eden Championship course had seen over the previous few days. Mal and the green staff presented the course in outstanding condition.

A number of finals were being play this day, the lead match being the Club Championship, over 36 holes – between Joe Bzik (club champion 2011 & 2016) and Grey Mossop (current Eden scratch team Captain). Both hailed as probably the two best players at Eden this year. Referee for the day was Club Gents Captain Richard Dixon.

Greg got off to a strong start winning the first two holes, until Joe pull one back on the third, Joe remained 1 under till Greg found the rear green bunker on the 6th to cost him the hole and square the match. Joe then won the 8th and with what looked like another win on the 9th after chipping on the green within 6”, Greg gained relief from the greenkeepers tyre tracks after over shooting the green to produce a majestic chip within 3 foot and sink the putt to the half the hole. Joe 1up at the turn and remained in that position until the 14th with par golf from both players. Following two incredibly long drives on 14 and 16 Greg secured wins on each holes, both players found themselves back in the clubhouse for lunch all square.

Fed and watered and back on the course for round two, Greg again started strong with wins on the 1st and the only birdie of the match on the 2nd to punish an excellent up and down by Joe from the green side bunker. Thunder and lightning briefly slowed play down but soon blew over allowing Greg to increase his lead to 3up after winning the 5th. The resilience and years of experience began to shine through as Joe despite obvious pain from a reoccurring back injury saw Joe pull the game back to all square by the 13th tee after winning holes 9th, 10th & 12th. All square on the 14th, a 475 yard par four (daunting for any golfer) but effortless through the power of Greg’s drive and finding the green in regulation to par the hole and put him back in the lead. Following a half on the 15th, the previous 33 hard fought holes appeared to be taking its toll as both players as neither were able to find the fairway with their tee shots on 16, Joe blocked to the right and Greg finding the deep hay long and to the left, both on the green for 3, Joe uncharacteristically 3 putted to lose the hole and head down the 17th 2 down. A hard fought hole for both players on the 17th where Greg found the trees on the right with his tee shot and Joe in the bunker to the left, both finished with a bogey which finished the match with Greg winning 2 and 1.

An excellent match supported and followed by a good number of members including Greg parents. Greg was reminded that he owed 50p after going finding the Captain’s charity bunker on the 8th – “a small price to pay for becoming Club Champion” said Greg.

“Fantastic turnout” – Over sixty players turned out for this year’s Captain’s Day Sunday 30th June.

Following a quick welcome by our 2019/20 Captain Richard Dixon and the distribution of goodie bags to each player containing drinks, snacks, tees, Prostate Cancer Pin, raffle ticket and crazy putting entry card not to mention a titleist golf ball, in return for a £5 donation to his Prostrate Cancer UK Charity the competition was set off at 10.00 with a shot gun start. With Richard’s support the prize fund was over £500 including cash and prizes.

Tom Hodgson the club Professional, took on a challenge from all player on the 13th hole and 9 player where put in the hat for the prize of beating Tom’s tee shot to the flag. Mal and the green staff presented the course in exception condition on the day.

Richard accompanied by his wife Lynn delivered beer, soft drinks and snacks throughout the day to all the players. The weather was overcast but warm and nobody got wet, thank goodness.

Richard commented…

Both Lynn and I had a great day meeting with all the members and experienced some great and not so great golf shots on the course, I’m really grateful to Tom for his time on the 13th and Mal and the team for the course condition. The crazy putting was a great success too – but best of all, the day has help my Prostate Cancer UK Charity clear the £800 mark collective so far this year. Next date for everyone diary is my away day 7th September – I hope is will be as successful as the home Captain’s day has been.”

The results on the day are available via HowDidiDo.
